Our approach to business is underpinned by a commitment to bring added social value to the people of Hertford. We believe in genuine community where growth and opportunity are available for everyone, we get involved through supporting and organising events for charities, schools, organisations and local sports teams through fund raising and sponsorship. Our annual calendar is always packed with various events which are always great fun to attend and we promote through our own social media, support with marketing and with the close relationships we have with other local businesses.
Our director Ami is a member of Hertford Rotary, as vice-vice chairman she attends weekly meetings and is an active fundraiser for the many charities and local causes they support. The first event of the year is the Rotary Pancake day which we host outside our office in Hertford selling pancakes for charity on a busy Saturday in town. During the Easter weekend, we hold an office open day with themed activities such as egg painting and lucky dips and of course plenty of chocolate for everyone!
During the summer months, Hertford Town Council organise a Carnival at the castle grounds. This is a favourite with the team when we get a stall set up in the sunshine (hopefully) serving afternoon tea and pimms and with all proceeds going to charity, this is a great chance for us get out of the office with our families and friends and support other local organisations at the same time, there are always plenty of activities on offer making it a brilliant day for everyone, their website is a hive for information for any local businesses wanting to get involved and check stall availability (http://www.hertfordcarnival.org.uk). Following in July is the Teddy Bears Picnic aimed at families with younger children which is also run at the castle where we get involved with running an activity and volunteering to support this event. Throughout the summer months, we are always involved with local schools and their parent run fetes and fundraising activities. We get involved in a variety of ways by helping to raise money through erecting sponsor boards, volunteering our time to help out, and offering advertisement through our office displays and interactive touch screens.
As the weather gets colder we are still kept really busy with October bringing Polio Awareness Month, the Rotary have been huge supporters of this and have donated a significant amount through campaigning and annual donations which has resulted in the illness very close to being eradicated. The international symbol for this is the purple crocus flower, in the past we have worked closely with the local schools and community to get the bulbs planted around the areas, they always bloom at this time of year as a reminder of this important cause. Not only does this time of year bring Halloween but also our anniversary of opening! A great opportunity for us to celebrate both of these by inviting all the local families to come to the office and take part in pumpkin carving and face painting for the children and a glass of champagne or two for the adults.
The annual Christmas Gala in Hertford, where the town lights and Christmas tree are all switched on is the start of the festive period for us here at Abel of Hertford, there is also an opportunity to enter the ‘Winning Windows’ competition, which local businesses enter their own take on a theme for a window display which is judged on the evening. This is a highlight of the year for us where we get our snow machine running which is always such a treat for all the crowds, in previous years we have also run a cheese on toast stall, the children have written letters to Father Christmas and we always have plenty of mince pies and mulled wine.
